REQUIREMENTS: you need a computer with minimum of 4 GB memory. The virtual machine itself requires 2 GB memory. And at least 10 GB free space on your hard disk.
You will need to have a terminal window running on your computer, it will be used for the practicals. A virtual machine (VM) image containing such a terminal program must be installed if you do not have such a terminal window, which is the case with most laptops installed with Windows OS. This install is not mandatory with Mac OS, which provides by default a terminal window.
To install a virtual machine, you first need to have Virtualbox installed on your computer. Please download and install the latest version according to your operating system (Windows or Mac, no need for Unix/Linux machines).
Then download the virtual machine image (First_Steps_UNIX.ova) from HERE on your computer. To install and run it, please read the Virtual Machine installation guide below.
If at the end of the procedure, you are not able to run the virtual machine, please contact us sufficiently in advance at firstname.lastname@example.org as no technical problem with the virtual machine will be handled during the course. Mac users can work with their terminal and for Windows users, we will propose you an alternative with a terminal app install (MobaXterm).
For the practicals, please follow the different steps explained in the Data to download guide (see Word document below).
