    Overview

    This 3-day advanced course is targeted at life scientists or bioinformaticians who are comfortable using the R statistical software in practice, and want to extend their knowledge. Lectures will be conducted in the morning, with practicals in the afternoon.

    Topics covered include, among others:

    • Best practices for programming in R
    • Using R to conduct reproducible analysis
    • Data structures and manipulation of data within R
    • Profiling code

    Learning objectives

    At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

    • reduce the number of potential errors and bugs when programming in R
    • efficiently use R data structures in order to store and process their data
    • profile their code to find and remove bottlenecks in order to make it run faster

    Prerequisites

    Knowledge / competencies:

    • Participants must be familiar with the R statistical analysis package prior to attending the course.
    • Participants who have followed the Introduction to statistics course should have sufficient knowledge in R, provided that they have regularly practiced after the course and that they are comfortable using the software.
    • Having attended the First Steps with R SIB course does not provide enough background to follow this course; regular practice with R extending beyond the First Steps course is required.

    Technical: A WiFi-equipped laptop with latest R version installed.

    Application

    The registration fees for academics are 150 CHF. This includes course content material, coffee breaks and a social dinner on Monday evening. Participants from non-academic institutions should contact us before application.

    The course is currently full.

    Additional information

    The course will be taught by Frédéric Schütz and coordinated by Diana Marek.

    We will recommend 1 ECTS credits for this course (given a passed exam at the end of the session). This represents about 30 hours of work, including preparation before the course, lectures and practicals, and a project to finish outside of the course.
