    Statistical techniques for genomics/life sciences

    Basel, 9-12 February 2015


    This course is designed to provide graduate students in the biomedical sciences with experience in the application of basic statistical analysis techniques to a variety of biological problems.

    Attendees will work through short tutorials on the topics discussed in the class. During the practical exercises students will learn how to work with the widely used "R" language and environment for statistical computing and graphics.

    Topics covered during the course include: reminders about numerical and graphical summaries, and hypothesis testing; multiple testing, permutation and bootstrap, linear models, correlation and regression; cluster analysis; principal component analysis.


    Skill requirements:

    • No prior statistical knowledge is required in order to attend the course. However, this course will be most useful for participants who have already followed a statistics course in the past (even if they don't remember much of it).

    Technical requirements:

    • Participants are asked to bring their own laptop with the "R" program installed (see for more information).
      Make sure that your WiFi is enabled and that you can connect to the internet through Eduroam (ask your local administrator if necessary).
    • We strongly recommend that participants get familiar with the R statistical analysis package prior attending the course.
      As the practical exercises will necessitate the use of the R program, you should already be familiar with the command line environment of such tool to avoid spending too much time during the practical exercises with the syntax of the program. Please read some documentation to familiarize yourself with the R language and try some simple examples present in our R tutorial.

    The registration fees for academics are 200 CHF. This includes course content material, coffee breaks and a social dinner. Participants from non-academic institutions should contact us before application.

    We will recommend 1 ECTS credit for this workshop (following a short exam at the end of the course)
