  • Survival Analysis

    Lausanne, 2 October 2015

    Overview

The aim of this course is to provide the basic knowledge and tools necessary to analyze survival data (data that consists of time durations until one event happen).

The first part of the course will consist in an introduction to survival analysis, illustrated with practical examples. During the second part, we will analyze survival data using the "R" statistical software; participants can bring their own survival data and get help on how to analyze them, or they will be provided with common datasets.

The course will go through the following topics: survival data, censoring, main functions and notations; Kaplan-Meier model, Kaplan-Meier curves, log-rank test; Cox PH model, PH assumption, Hazard Ratio.

    Audience

This course is intended for biologists who have a general background in statistics.

    Learning objectives

At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

    • Identify survival data and be aware of its peculiarities
    • Represent survival curves
    • Evaluate the difference in survival between different groups
    • Determine potential explanatory variables for survival time

    Prerequisites

Knowledge / competencies: A basic knowledge in statistics is recommended in order to attend the course; participants should also be familiar with the command line environment of the “R” language.
